FAQs

Q:

What does "Elysion" mean?

A:

It is tradition in the KHG dorm to name certain places after greek mythological places. Therefore it is obvious to stick to this theme, when thinking of a name for our gym. The Elysion was the part of the underworld in greek mythology, where only those distinguished people were admitted, that were chosen by the gods. Also known as the "Island of the Blessed", those admitted lived a happy and carefree after-live in Elysion.

Q:

Q:

A:

Always! You only have to write us a mail.

Q:

Why no treadmill? And what else can I do for cardio?

A:

We don’t have a treadmill for several reasons:

  1.  We don’t have the budget for a high quality treadmill.
  2. Unfortunately the space available at Elysion Gym is very limited and a treadmill would use up so much space, that it would be difficult to accommodate other more important equipment.
  3. A great opportunity for jogging/running presents itself right outside the dorm: The „Leechwald“ right next to the “Hilmteich” is located north-east of Leechgasse and can be reached in about 5 to 10 minutes (if jogging). There you can find a beautiful, signposted running track that leads through the forests of the north-eastern "Graz metropolitan area“.
If you prefer swimming, the "Sport Union Bad“ is really close to the dorm and can be reached in about 10 minutes (if walking).
  4. You don’t need a treadmill for INDOOR cardio training. We have an ASSAULT AIRBIKE, which can be used for short interval, high intensity cardio training, a typical ergometer and everything you need for a boxing workout, including several jumping ropes. In case you havent tried that for cardio yet, you will be surprised how demanding it is.
If you think that this is still not enough, or if you are looking for a challenge, contact the gym team. We will put together something special for a really intense cardio session.
  5. Have you ever seen or heard any good runner, no matter if sprinter or marathon guy that relies on a treadmill as the secret to their success?
    NEITHER HAVE I!

Q:

What can I do with the equipment? I don’t see the machines I’m used to.

A:

Our equipment focuses heavily on free weights training. Of course you also have possibilities for a bodyweight workout (Calisthenics).

If you are not familiar with free weights training, you can check out the books that are available at the gym (please leave the books in the gym; don’t take them away!), learn exercises via GOOD Youtube-Channels (MI40 Muscle Intelligence, ATHLEAN-X) or ask the gym team for advice.

In addition to that, you will have the possibility to join a regular „Free Practice“-Session, where you can ask for advice, learn new exercises and more.

Q:

Why free weigths training?

A:

Free weights training has several advantages over machine training:

  1.  It’s easier affordable. We run 100% on your gym fees, so we have no money for buying expensive machines.
  2. Free weights need less space. This is extraordinarily important in the case of Elysion Gym because we have little space available.
  3. It’s more individual. A machine predefines your way of motion. Your own personal way of motion depends on your body type and parameters like weight, height, flexibility etc. That means machine training is always a compromise because people have naturally different bodies and machines can´t be tailored to everyone’s specific needs.
  4. You’ll become a more balanced athlete through free weights training. Free weights training promotes inter-muscular coordination and overall strength, which can be applied to a lot of different challenges not only in the gym but in daily life.
